We depart from our usual technical topics this month, in order to feature some exciting new SMPTE programs getting underway. To accommodate our presenter's availability, and to not get too close to NAB time, this month's meeting is a week earlier than usual. Understanding and partnering with education in our industries has become an organizational priority for SMPTE. This renewed focus includes our members' professional education, interaction with local educational institutions and building a participatory community in the online space. Recent efforts inside SMPTE include polling Section members, BOG llvel strategy sessions and discussions at the Section level. Brad will provide an update on the work underway at SMPTE headquarters and by the Educational Advisory Committee to address SMPTE's renewed focus towards Education. We will also discuss the new SMPTE 365 networking community, and the Professional Development Academy (PDA) programs available free to members at all levels. We hope that current and new members will want to take an active role in these outreach efforts. Brad Fortner is Program Director, Operations and Technology, Rogers Communications Centre, Ryerson University - Brad's role is to ensure that Ryerson's Rogers Communications Centre stays on the cutting edge of media production. His efforts proved essential to the initial technology planning and the installation management stage of the Centre's start-up. He has since provided leadership in establishing the Centre's pioneering efforts in HDTV production, Non Linear Editing, Visual Computing and Interactive Television. Brad has been recognized by Ryerson University for his decades of service, receiving the prestigious "Ryersonian of the Year," awarded in 1999. In 2004, the SMPTE honored him with the "Citation for Outstanding Service," based on his work with the Toronto SMPTE Section. His commitment to education twice earned him a finalist position in the "Educator of the Year" category of the Canadian New Media Awards. He currently sits as Promotions Advisor to the Toronto Section of SMPTE, sits on the executive of the Toronto Final Cut Pro Users Group as well as serving as Educational Director for the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers.
