Closed Captioning in Digital Television

On 12 December 2006 Warner Johnston, Chair of the IEEE - Broadcast Technology Society New York Chapter, gave a distance presentation on Closed Captioning, CEA_708B Standard, from New York to an audience of 18 members and guests attending the SMPTE Detroit Section meeting at the studios of WXYZ-TV in Southfield, Michigan.

Warner's presentation was primarily concerned with CEA-708 C, which is Closed Captioning for ATSC Television. He explained what the CEA was, and gave a ligtle history on the evolution of closed captioning since the early 70's. ATVCC, DTVCC, captioning methods, CC1 & CC2, transport technology behind providing the closed captioning services (including eXtended Data Service), and content advisory information were among the topics presented at this meeting.

The complete presentation along with time for introductions and questions lasted less than 90 minutes. The distance presentation process worked quite well. The attendees were very interested in the subject and followed up with questions.
