Andrew Larsen from Adaptive Broadband was the speaker at the October
meeting of the Detroit Section. Mr. Larsen updated the 36 members and
guests on the latest technology for DTV Studio-to-Transmitter Links as well
as giving a report on advances in digital ENG transmission using digital
COFDM technology. The presentation included a description of the MRC
TwinStream systems capable of carrying both DTV and NTSC on the same
channel. A tape was shown that displayed a split screen demonstration of
the advantages of COFDM modulation in mobile and aerial ENG applications.
Mr. Larsen is shown in the photo at left explaining the operation of
the TwinStream system to one of the Detroit Section members.
The meeting was hosted by WWJ-TV at their new transmitter building in
Oak Park. Following the meeting WWJ-TV staff gave tours of the facility
that included a close up view of the new tower and their impressive NTSC
and DTV transmitter installation. In the photo, WWJ engineer and SMPTE
manager Peter Sockett (in blue shirt, upper right) explains the control
